In Memory of Dr. Ken — Keeping His Eagle Watch Legacy Alive

Dear Eagle Watch Friends,

As another Bald Eagle nesting season begins here in South Florida, I wanted to take a moment to reach out to everyone who has been part of this wonderful community over the years.

I have been thinking a great deal about Dr. Kenneth Schneider, or simply Dr. Ken, as so many of us knew him. I cannot begin to tell you how much I miss him.

Ken was so much more than a friend to me. He was a mentor, a dedicated conservationist, the longtime webmaster for South Florida Audubon Society (SFAS), and, in so many ways, our personal hero for the eagles. His passion for these magnificent birds was extraordinary, but what made him truly special was his willingness to share that passion with everyone around him.

Ken didn't just watch eagles. He brought people together. Through his photographs, detailed observations, countless hours in the field, and the discussions on this very forum, he created something that became much bigger than any one nest or nesting season. He helped build a community of people who genuinely cared about the lives and future of South Florida's Bald Eagles.

And I think that is something worth holding on to.

Over the past several weeks, I have been working hard to update the South Florida Audubon Society website and begin the enormous task of preserving and transferring the historical observations, discussions, and photographs from this Nabble forum to the SFAS website.

Reading through these old discussions has been both wonderful and emotional. Seeing Ken's observations, the photographs, the conversations, and the names of so many familiar eagle watchers reminds me just how much history lives within these pages.

This is not simply a collection of old messages. It is years of community science, friendships, dedication, and memories. It is a record of the eagles we watched grow, the eaglets we celebrated, the challenges we faced, and the people who cared enough to keep coming back.

The preservation project is still very much a work in progress. There are thousands of historical records to organize, photographs to recover, and details to verify. It will take time, but I believe this history deserves to be protected and made available for future generations.

Most importantly, I want everyone to know that South Florida Audubon Society is committed to doing its part to carry Dr. Ken's work forward.

We can never replace Ken. I would never pretend that we could. But we can honor him by continuing the work he loved so much.

With another nesting season upon us, I would love to see this wonderful community become active again. Whether you were one of the original observers, shared photographs, followed the Pembroke Pines nest, or simply enjoyed reading Ken's updates, I hope you will consider getting involved once more.

There are still eagles to watch, nesting seasons to document, photographs to share, and stories waiting to be told. Every observation matters, and every person who contributes helps continue the legacy Ken left behind.

I also hope that those of you who have historical photographs, observations, or memories of Ken and the eagles will consider sharing them as we work to preserve this remarkable history.

I know how much Ken loved these birds, and I know how much this community meant to him.

For me, this project is personal. It is about honoring someone I deeply respected, someone I was fortunate enough to call a friend, and someone whose dedication made a lasting difference in South Florida.

So, as we begin another eagle nesting season, I hope we can come together again — for the eagles, for this community, and especially for Dr. Ken.

Ken, we miss you. Your work mattered, your friendship meant the world, and your legacy will not be forgotten.

Happy birdwatching, everyone.

I also want to remind everyone that this Nabble forum is no longer actively maintained, and the historical discussions, photographs, and observations preserved here could disappear at any time.

That is one of the main reasons I have been working so hard to transfer and preserve these records on the South Florida Audubon Society website.

Years of valuable observations, incredible photographs, and memories of Dr. Ken and this wonderful eagle-watching community are here, and I simply do not want us to lose them.

The preservation process is still underway, and not every photograph or historical record has been recovered or verified. But my goal is to make sure that as much of this history as possible remains accessible to everyone, long after this forum is gone.

You can follow the preservation project and explore the developing historical archive here:

If you have saved any original photographs, observations, or other materials from this forum, I would love to hear from you. They may help us recover pieces of the history that would otherwise be lost.

This is about protecting Dr. Ken's legacy and preserving the remarkable history you all helped create.

Thank you all for being part of it.
