Leesburg man fined for destroying bald-eagle's nest
ORLANDO -- A Leesburg man today was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine by a federal magistrate judge after pleading guilty to taking part in destroying a bald eagle's nest.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Gregory J. Kelly also ordered Kristopher Graham, 28, to perform 75 hours of community service at a local Audubon Society center as part of violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
Graham's company, Graham Brothers Construction Inc., along with Specialized Services Inc., was working at a residential real estate development site in Sanford in January 2005 when employees noticed a nest and at least two bald eagles, according to court records.
Graham's company and Specialized Services refused to use its employees to remove the tree and the nest. But Graham and representatives from the other company, however, agreed to let workers from a development company use their heavy equipment to destroy the tree and nest on Jan. 21, 2005, according to court records.
In March 2009, Graham Brothers and Specialized Services pleaded guilty and were each fined $75,000 as part of the incident.
