tag:bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com,2006:post-7575739How to post photos on a sub-FORUM2020-12-28T05:05:46Z2020-12-28T05:41:49ZNewMexiKen
You must be a "Member" of this FORUM to allow you to
reply or post new topics and upload your photos.
You must first register and subscribe (if desired)
and then request membership in the pop-up which should
appear if you attempt to post.

If you have problems, please contact: < ken@rosyfinch.com >

The procedure for posting photos provides two alternatives--
either post a photo from your computer or device or,
if your photo is published on the Internet, you may
post the address (URL) of your photo. In the latter case,
be sure that the photo is JPG format.

The address must end in ".jpg" or it will not display.

Be sure to "resize" the image, as the original may be
larger than the size of the screen.

Let the image "float," which lets you decide where
you might wish to place it if you are including text or captions.

Post in the appropriate sub-forum.

INSTRUCTIONS:
= = = = = =

The menu for posting photos is fairly straightforward:

First, select the appropriate sub-FORUM in which to
post your photo (e.g., a specific nest, a sighting away
from a known nest, or others as listed).

If you wish to have photos appear in your message, use the
drop-down menu at the top of the "New Topic" or "Reply" window.
If you simply paste the link into the text, clicking on the link will
direct the user to a single photo or separate web page.

Select: "New Topic" or "Reply" --> "Insert Image" --> choose either to upload
from your computer or copy the image's address from the internet

If you do choose the latter option, the display photo on many
sites such as Facebook or Flicker etc may not be in JPG format,
so you may need to click on it to view it in a separate window
which may be JPG or provide options such as "save image URL"
or format or size. Just be sure that the URL ends in ".jpg"

Generally, the "Large" size option works fine, as it resizes the
image to fit the screen. Also let the image "float" inside any text
you may wish to include. It will justify to the left side of the display
and then the code for the image may be positioned anywhere
in your message.

IF you have multiple photos it is best to array them in a vertical
stack rather than side by side, as they will otherwise spread across
the screen horizontally and may not be as friendly when viewed
on a phone screen,

If you watermark your photos, please try to place the mark
so that it does not detract from the subject of your photo.

tag:bald-eagles-of-broward-county-florida.17.s1.nabble.com,2006:post-7575317IMPORTANT Request for Volunteer Miami Gardens nest watchers (DA008)2019-07-01T13:14:29Z2020-09-12T03:43:14ZNewMexiKen
Shawnlei Breeding, Audubon EagleWatch Program Manager is greatly concerned about the possibility that developers may (unintentionally) cause the Miami Gardens (Andover) eagles or their nest DA008 (Temp ID DA 981) to be disturbed or cause them to abandon it. The developers have been counseled about the necessary precautions, but it is of the utmost importance that one or more volunteers step forward to monitor the site. The nest itself is required to be protected, even when the eagles are not present or have not returned to breed in late September or early October. Since they have the permit to proceed, they will be held harmless if they follow the USFWS guidelines even if the eagles abandon the nest or are injured or killed. Shawnlei will provide the necessary orientation, training and reporting procedures.

Brian Rapoza, <fieldtrips@tropicalaudubon.org>, who is Vice President/Field Trip Coordinator for Tropical Audubon Society is working to identify local birders willing to monitor the nest and submit online reports. He is seeking more information about the nest location and how to access it. Please contact him or Shawnlei if any of you can help with this task. I will be most useful if several watchers can coordinate their schedules to assure maximum coverage.

Again, The coordinates on Google Earth are: [ 25.96331800, -80.21255000 ]

Shawnlei writes:

Hello!

I’ve been informed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service that the developer recently applied for and received a federal eagle disturbance permit for their planned work near this nest. I have not seen a copy of the permit but the permit will outline what they can and cannot do at various distances from the nest when eagles are present and attempting to nest this fall.

Monitoring of this nest will be of the utmost importance to make sure they abide by the permit stipulations. Failure to abide by the permit stipulations is considered a federal violation. A local photographer occasionally reported to me what was happening near the nest last season, but EagleWatch does not have an assigned volunteer to monitor this nest. This location would definitely benefit from more consistent monitoring and reporting. The monitoring reports are necessary for Florida Fish and Wildlife to build a case against a developer if they are suspected of violating their permit. If you all know of anyone who would be willing to not only visit the nest but also submit reports in our online nest database, let me know!

Thank you so much!

An observer writes (OCT 23, 2017):

I saw your eagle site and your contact information and wanted to let you know about the PSN nest. In short: The eagles were last seen by me at the nest on October 5, 2016, the afternoon before a big storm hit us last year. They never came back.

I drive by the nest everyday, 2 to 4 times, and have never seen them again.

This last hurricane finally destroyed the large nest that was on the massive Australian pine. Although I have seen bald eagles twice since the original abandonment, near the tree and nest, I never saw these go near the nest. These birds looked to be unrelated immature birds.

I have not heard anything new about the planned construction of the Wal-mart and Publix on the eagle nest site since the eagles and the nest are no longer there.

Exquisite photos, Juan!

Thanks for keeping a watch on the North Miami-Dade nest. If they are to breed this season you should be seeing both members of the pair and much more activity in the coming weeks.

Thanks again for your interesting observations and photo, Juan--

This is possibly a different eagle. Impossible to say for sure, but it looks more bulky and it appears to have a thicker neck and rounder head than in the earlier photos. Profile images of the head might permit comparison of size of beak and depth of gape. Photos of feet may provide a gauge of length of hind toes of each.

Of course, finding two at once would be great!

You might start a new topic with the date of each observation rather than continue the same string, although I must admit it is very convenient to just scroll up and down to compare the photos.

Beautiful photos, Juan! It will be important to determine whether this bird and mate will breed here again this fall. Restoration/renovation of the nest usually begins by late September or early October. The shape of this bird suggests that it is a male, but it is easier to determine this if both are seen together. Male is generally smaller and body is more tapered towards the tail. Females have a noticeably longer hallux (hind toe) and the gape of beak may extend back to or beyond the middle of her eye.

We never determined whether this nest produced any eaglets last season, though they were seen at the nest numerous times during breeding season.

Thanks for joining us on the FORUM and we look forward to your contributions!

Yesterday on my way home I saw an eagle flying over Miami Gardens Dr and the I-75 exit, he/she was flying away from the nest heading North over I-75. I went to the nest but I didn't see any activity. I waited at the vicinity of the nest and an eagle landed on one of the pine trees close to the nest. I was unable to take any pictures or wait any longer since it started storming.

Today I went back to the nest and no activity was present, I waited and an eagle landed again on one of the pine trees around 75 feet from the nest. I took some pictures and waited until dark, but the eagle never went to the nest.

I will go back Saturday early morning to see if I have better luck spotting activity on the nest.

Here are some pictures from today.

Several residents in the Palm Springs North community have reported continued activity at the nest.

On April 27 two neighbors went for a walk after hearing some eagle chatter. They took the binoculars with them, and found two eagles off to the side of the nest on a distant tree. They had not seen seen any activity for a week.

While they were watching another neighbor who lives on 86th Ave which is closer to the nest said the pair had one eaglet, which the others did not know. This person watches them all the time and I hope to soon have much more information about the status of the nest.

It appears that this pair is following the unusual pattern of breeding later in the season, which may occur after failure of the first attempt. This is happening this year all over Florida, most likely because of the unusual weather pattern of rain and severe winds from thunderstorms in January and February.

An eagle watcher in Palm Springs North writes:

Is it possible for another pair to take over the nest once the others have left? There was no activity for almost two weeks then I noticed what looked to me like a larger female in the nest. She is there every morning. Was this the time of year when the original eagles would leave? It just seems like something different is going on? Any news on the shopping center being canceled?

My reply:

Thanks for the update. This has been a very unusual year for the eagles. The wet "summer-like" winter seems to have disrupted their normal cycle. Many first broods have failed and several pairs are nesting for a second time. The juvenile eagles s would have normally fledged by now and would have departed northward by the end of May or early June.

The few reports I have had about the PSN eagles have been that there was no activity at the nest , usually early in the mornings. I went by only once about two weeks ago in the afternoon and again saw no eagles.

Thanks so much for this information. I feared that the construction and increased disturbance from the widened roadway may have discouraged them from breeding.

As for the planned construction of the shopping center I have not heard any updates. The official Palm Springs North municipal web site is not very informative. Perhaps some of the readers of this FORUM may know more about this. We also need more reports on activity at this nest-- is it possible that they also are breeding late?

These are very dramatic photos, Luis. It appears they still may be courting, a bit late for south Florida eagles. Beautiful photos, Luis! I wonder if these eagles are too far behind in the breeding cycle to start a family. It seems the south Florida eagles have adapted to a schedule that provides lots of fish and young birds when the eaglets are growing very fast, and also gets them out of the nest before heat stress becomes a greater problem. they also can fly north to forage in cooler water if they are able to depart by mid-May.

Dade County Nest DA004 , Male continues to be active. Bringing in sticks and setting them in . I've observed and stayed for quite awhile after we got hit by the recent storms on Sat and Sun Morning. Sat. Sun. Mon and today all I've seen is him . He comes , sits for a bit then heads North . No sign of the Mrs. Last weekend they were BOTH active bringing in new nest material after our the first nasty weather for close to 2 hours .

I received this interesting report today from a local resident who has been watching the Palm Springs North nest. He/She writes:

"Hi Ken

Sometime around 11 today I heard a lot of chatter among the eagles so I got my binoculars to watch.

Some different behavior was going on. The smaller lighter colored one, I am assuming is the female was in the nest while the other was nearby in a tree. So far I have always seen them together in the nest. They were calling out to each other but the female didn't want the other near the nest. So I watched for about 45 minutes.

Finally the one that was sitting one the other tree landed in the nest then the next thing I know another Eagle came in from the south side and the two flew off to the north. About 15 minutes later the one came back and landed in the nest. There was a lot of chatter but it wasn't the usual chatter. Then the one eagle got on top of the female lots of flapping wings but it didn't last long. I thought it was interesting enough to tell you about it.

I know someone has been taking pictures with a long telephoto lens so maybe they got some good ones. Any news on the shopping center? Maybe if they have a family soon the shopping center won't be around for a couple of years. Boy do I feel privileged to see these birds every day."

MY REPLY: Thanks so much for the exciting report. The smaller eagle is actually the male. You describe copulation or an attempt. Successful mating only takes about 7-8 seconds of contact. Sometimes the male may mount without actually copulating as part of courtship and bonding. It is actually getting a bit late for them to lay the first egg, so please keep an eye on the nest. It is high up and deep and it may be difficult for you to see an incubating adult in the nest.

An alternate explanation for the behavior is that an egg may have hatched. Sometimes the eagles get excited at this event. If so, one of the adults will stay on or very near the nest for most of the time during the first two weeks or so, and you may see prey being brought to the nest and feeding even before any eaglet becomes visible.

Again, thank you and please keep us posted. I hope the photographer will share some photos.

Phil and I saw both eagles at the nest, they were eating a fish, once they finish they fixed the nest for a while and flew away in the North West direction. By the way I also saw one of the eagles on the nest early in the morning in P.P. Enjoy the pictures.

More information about the nest in the Village of Palm Springs North--

A ground observer has seen the pair of eagles out flying near the nest every day, mostly in the mornings

Construction has not begun on the proposed Wal-Mart. It is to be located on the corner of Miami Gardens Drive and 87th Avenue. The expansion of 87th Avenue has been completed but there is no evidence of construction activity on the site.

If anyone knows about the site plan for the shopping center, please let us know. I hope that FWC is in communication with the Village and/or the contractor to assure that no disturbance takes place near the nest during breeding season, and that the nest tree and the perimeter required under Florida Bald Eagle Guidelines are protected.

Correction-- this is not the "Mega Mall," which will be nearby but located on the other (west) side of I-75 directly across from Miami Gardens Drive.

Located the Palm Springs nest this morning after I received an e-mail from Ken as to it's status. After reading the general location, I found the nest at the corner of 87 th. Ave and NW 181 St. in Miami Dade. The nest is about 100 to 150 feet north of 181 St. on the west side of 87 th Ave. It is best seen from the east side of 87 th Ave.I did not see Eagles, but it is a very fine nest.
