As of March 23, 2012, Florida not-for-profit corporation Pembroke Pines Eagle Watch, Inc. was chartered for the purpose of educating the public about conservation of bald eagles and to protect the eagles that are nesting in Pembroke Pines. Barry Heimlich, Bonnie Ross, and Robert Schwartztol are its directors, with Barry Heimlich as its president. The corporation, whose website is
pembrokepineseaglewatch.com has the immediate goal of establishing live streaming high definition video of the bald eagle nest on its website. Installation of the camera, solar powered camera and wireless internet hookup is scheduled to take place after the eagles have departed the nest area this year and before they return to the nest in the fall. All the elements of this challenging project are already in place - a plan, selection of the necessary equipment and system design, partnership with a highly qualified and experienced systems integrator (JES Hardware Solutions), partnership with West Broward High School's science department which will receive the wireless video signal and transmit it to the internet, and partnerships with the City of Pembroke Pines, Broward County, Broward Schools, other local and state agencies, and the South Florida Audubon Society. The project team led by Barry Heimlich includes Ken Schneider who was one of the first persons to find the nest, Doug Young who is the president of South Florida Audubon Society, Nancy Boyle who is volunteering to help set up the website, Norman Alford who is head of the science department at West Broward High School and this year's Florida Teacher of the Year, and James Sessions of JES Hardware Solutions. An educational and research program revolving around these eagles' behavior will be planned for West Broward High School and other Broward public schools. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis and the city commission enthusiastically support the project and have established the Pembroke Pines Eagle Sanctuary on the property where the eagle nest is located.
