I may be way off, but it seems that when the male is in the nest, he is usually on the left side, facing east mostly, but looks around in different directions and his head is quite visible most of the time. Seems he's interested in seeing what's going on around the area.
The female tends to sit almost in the middle of the nest and hunkers down more. She seems more interested in the nest and how it is arranged (she frequently moves things around and sometimes gets busy doing something in the bottom of the nest) rather than what is going on outside the nest.
