The oldest of the three Pembroke Pines eaglets will be 11 weeks old on Friday, April 9th. This is the age that both eaglets fledged last year. Thankfully, the melaleucas have grown up to partially obscure the nest, and additional signage and parking restrictions are in place in front of the nest. This, and our admonitions to media about the traffic hazards posed by the large number of observers last year, have kept the crowds down.
The youngsters are branching and "helicoptering" in advance of that first fateful flight. This is a particularly hazardous time for them. If you visit, please try to determine the number of young in the nest, as we would like to keep track of when they fledge. Also, please be alert to any indication that an eaglet may be in danger.
Anyone who visits the nest site may fill out an electronic observation report, which you can automatically send to the Middle School science students for their study of the relationship of traffic density to behavior of the eagles. The form is available at the link at the top of this page.
