Thursday morning May 21

Al Griffin

I arrived at about 08:30 and found Tom watching, he said both Eaglets were in a pine close to the road at 06:30. Ken and Mary Lou arrived at the same time and we had a nice hello. About 08:50 both Eaglets flew in to a perch in the pine to the east. Ken and I took photos while Tom talked with Mary Lou. The Eaglets flew to a new spot east in a pine by the canal. Ken and Mary Lou went home and Tom and I walked down to take photos.  Tom and I stayed until 10:30 with no sight of the adults.

Only a few minutes after Mary Lou and I arrived at around 8:30 AM to join Ed and Al, the two chicks appeared from the area of the melaleuca cemetery to the west, and flew in to roost on the large pine along the road, just east of the nest tree.  Though we had been away for a month, I believe that I recognized Justice as being darker and having a white spot over his breastbone. Hope also seems to have a line of demarcation between a darker area in her neck and upper breast, and a lighter brown lower breast. The breast of Justice looks more uniformly dark. Both are developing some yellow at the base of their bills, and their eyes are dark. If any of you seasoned watchers can evaluate this description, or think I may have it backwards, please chime in!

Because of other appointments, we could only stay for about a half hour, but it was great seeing our friends, both human and avian!

Justice follows Hope in from melaleucas:

Justice roosting (note ruffled feathers show white bases and almost make a necklace; when feathers are compressed, only one white spot tended to show at center of upper breast):

Hope roosting:

Hope flying away:
