Tuesday, March 6-- Immature Bald Eagle in wetlands SE of nest

We were out before sunrise this morning on the wetlands near our West Miramar home, about 1 mile SE of the eagle nest. The sun was just creeping up to the top of an abandoned utility pole next to the unpaved extension of Miramar Parkway/SW 196th Avenue,  where I saw this immature Bald Eagle. Later, at about 8:00 AM we saw an adult flying NW toward the area of the nest. It was not carrying prey.

Fabulous to think our nesting pair is populating the area with eagles.

Good point, Barry. It is likely that some of the eight survivors from the past four years have returned to the general area. While they will not acquire their white heads and start breeding until they are five years old, in the near future we may witness competition for urban nesting sites. The Everglades simply do not have enough large trees to provide nesting sites.

The adults will actively drive away any of the young from prior years if they venture within their territory, which is said to extend 2-3 miles around their nest.
