Wakodahatchee and Green Cay

I finally made it to these 2 beautiful preserves and it was more than worth the trip. We are very fortunate to have such beautiful, close by areas that make watching birds and other wildlife so easy and enjoyable. It's a short trip north, just before Boca. It's a great place to take your kids or family members of all ages as it's so accessible. For me...it was like a free "E ticket" every time we spotted another bird to watch and photograph. (You can google the locations and there are directions)

The raised boardwalks make it so easy to spot and study the birds as the they fly by or feed in the water. Picture taking is awesome and a smaller point and shoot is all you need for many of the birds as they feed right by the the boardwalk. A Wood Stock was pushing its beak through the water finding food right beside us, such that its whole body would fill the frame with a small camera. There were many nests and babies...Great Blue Herons, Purple Gallinules, and Tri-color Herons, to name just a few. We stopped for a long time watching the speedy Lest Tern as it dove repeatedly into the water and came out with a small fish. Birds of prey were there too as an osprey was flying around with a fish in its talons looking for a place to land. You never know what might be around the next curve of the walkway (and the one at Green Cay is 2 miles of long) The birds are often hard to spot...which makes it all the more fun. A Glossy Ibis was hidden under vegetation but came out as we watched and waited for a photo op. It's also very interesting and educational as there are markers describing the different species you might see and what I really enjoyed learning about....the diverse vegetation and it's role in the wetlands. My favorite is Duck Weed, which is a beautiful, bright shade of green and floats on the water's surface.

With the eagles taking their much deserved vacation after raising 2!!! successful babies they still are impacting my life. I am exploring and enjoying the nature world around us here in South FL like I never have before. I miss watching the eagles, but am so thrilled to be able to continue observing and learning about many other spectacular birds right here in our own surroundings.

The Green Cay has water year round from the County/City's reuse treatment plant.  After treating wastewater at a third level, they are returning it to the environment.  This attracts the birds and other creatures year round.  I wish we had the space in Broward to this type of project.  I love going there.

We will be back in Florida for two weeks beginning July 8th. We do have a pretty full schedule, but we would like to join a group to visit these great places.
