Lisa, the smaller eagle we saw that had heavier markings was probably a male, maybe a year younger. The variety in the depth of markings on this bird's head can probably be accounted by variations in light and acuity of focus. Newfee was very large when first seen, while the second one that Phil called Glory was the smaller male. Jose and I photographed the same bird and noted subtle differences in our photos. This bird shows signs of molt, so it is actively replacing the immature (4th year) plumage. Note the variation in length of tail and covert feathers as new adult white feathers are growing in. Some of the dark feathers are still visible on her head but are obscured as they are gradually being replaced by adult white feathers. In sum, the female did not grow rapidly, as she was the same size when we first saw her 2 months ago.
